kaza The town of Kaza is divided into two areas, the old town and the new town. The new town has some government buildings. The monastery of Ki Gompa is 11 km from Kaza. It is the biggest gompa in entire Spiti and almost 400 monks live over here. The monks of the monastery are busy in the construction and maintenance of the monastery and welcome all the donations. Kibber has the reputation of being the highest village in the world at an altitude of 4250 m. it is 11 km from Ki Gompa. Around 150 monks live at Dankar Gompa.

ki, kibberKi, the oldest and largest gompa in Spiti, about 14 kms from Kaza, was built by Ringchen Zangpo and belongs to the Gelukpa order. The gompa is famous for its priceless collection of ancient thangkas, including Tibetan silk thangkas upto 800 years old and frescoes depicting the life of Padmasambhava. About 11 kms from Ki village is the small village of Kibber, also known as Khyipur. It claims to be the highest village in the world, at 4205m, although Gete (4270m), another village about seven kms east of Ki, has a better claim to this honour. Kibber was a part of the overland salt trade centuries ago, and is a pretty little place. The Ladarch festival in Kibber each July attracts Buddhists from all over the region.

Pin Valley

pin-valleyThe Pin Valley has been declared a national park and is famous for its wildlife. The beautiful valley holds Spiti's only concentration of Nyingmapa Buddhism. The most important gompa in the valley is the 600 year old Kungri Gompa.

Tabo Gompa

tabomonasteryTabo is the popular Buddhists Monastery situated in the Spiti Valley of India. It stands perched at the average height of 3050 m and falls between the Indian -Tibetan border. Tabo is regarded as one amongst the most significant and most consecrated monasteries of Himachal Pradesh. The monastery was founded in 996 AD by the great Indian scholar Guru Ratnabhadra or Rinchen Sangpo. The ancient monastery is more than 1000 years old and is known for its well preserved frescos. It is populary referred as the 'Ajanta of the Himalayas'. The Gompa has over sixty monks. It is the most important tourists center,visited in greater numbers than any other Gompa in Himachal Pradesh.

Shashur Gompa

shoshar gompaShashur Gompa is 3 kms from Keylong. Dedicated to a Zanskari lama, it was built in the 16th century and is of the Gelukpa order. The 5m thangka is famous in the region. An annual festival, held every June or July is renowned for the mask dances performed by the lamas.
